From Lab Work to Travel Revision

December 30, 2025

These notes describe the events of Monday, 12/29/2025.

I can now see The Sisters from my house
I woke up around 5:45am, a little before my alarm at 6am. The predawn waking, the body anticipating the day. Beautiful sunrise this morning. The winter light, the quality of dawn even on the shortest days. I began my morning routine. During a portion of it I listened to more of the Lex Friedman/Michael Levin podcast. The conversation about emergence, intelligence, and biological systems continuing to unfold.

I went in for lab work. The new company at the clinic doing the labs, LabCorp, seems to have issues with their software and with training. The friction in healthcare systems, the complications when providers change.

I ran some errands. I stopped by the First Alternative Coop for coffee. It was good. They also have a self-service food bar. May need to go there again sometime. I should see if I can find my Coop number. The local knowledge Aaron had shared proving accurate, the discovery of a new regular spot. I fueled up at the Chevron station. I got some groceries at Winco. The practical tasks of maintaining daily life.

I ate some Raman for breakfast. I scanned most of the rest of the mail. Just a little more to go. The administrative backlog nearly eliminated, the pile of paper almost completely converted to digital records. I had a KAI conversation with Ameerah. Cliffe couldn't make it. I worked on a few actions that came from the conversation. The Kitbag Africa International project advancing, the next steps becoming clearer.

I processed some email. I created a summary. I thanked The Hotel Nelson. I forwarded travel plans to TripIt. I captured books and movies that I had sent reminders to myself for. The digital housekeeping, the organization of information and commitments. I exercised. Three 45-second planks, 15 bird-dogs, 5 iterations of the world's greatest stretch. The fitness routine continuing, the New Zealand preparation staying on track. I did some chores around the house. I put the stickers on my car. The small maintenance tasks, the details attended to.

I was largely unproductive for a while. The honest recognition of downtime, the periods when momentum stalls and nothing particular gets accomplished. I walked to Suds. During the walk I listened to the end of Never Split the Difference. The negotiation strategies finally completed, the audiobook journey concluded. The idea forming to create roleplay exercises with Claude to practice these techniques. I had beer with Tim and Jack. Jack gave me a ride home. The Monday gathering, the familiar rhythm of friendship.

I played some Minecraft. I developed the portal area below Lelandhome. The virtual construction continuing, the space taking shape for eventual sharing with Leland. I pondered eliminating the Queenstown leg of the New Zealand trip in favor of hanging out around Christchurch more. The travel planning evolving, the recognition that sometimes less is more. I talked to Joey about it. She's in for eliminating the Queenstown leg. The flexibility of planning with someone who shares the philosophy that the journey matters more than hitting every destination. Sometimes the best trips involve staying longer in fewer places rather than rushing through more of them.

The day moved from systems and logistics—lab work frustrations, errands accomplished, mail nearly eliminated—to moments of strategic thinking about what matters. The KAI project advancing with clear next steps. The New Zealand trip simplifying toward something more sustainable. The audiobook finished with ideas for application. The honest admission of unproductive time sitting alongside real progress on avoided tasks. Not every hour productive, but the day as a whole moving things forward. The administrative backlog almost cleared, the travel plans becoming more focused, the virtual world for Leland taking shape. Sometimes progress looks like doing less with more intention.
