Carrying Capacity Sunday

Morning routine. Planned the day. Published "Running Below the Nameplate." Grocery run. Reworked the data center slides around carrying capacity. Talked the Salon talk through while editing. Leisurely walk to Suds, mapping the route. Gracie behind the bar. Walk home.

Rebuilding a talk around carrying capacity, then walking it off at Suds

Events and activities that occurred on Sunday, October 18, 2026

The morning opened with publishing "Running Below the Nameplate," the post about derating, and by midday it had also earned a place in my story collection. The idea at its center, that a part rated for one load should run below its nameplate when conditions turn harsh, has stopped being a metaphor and become a way of running my days.

Most of the day belonged to the Philomath Salon talk, now a week away. I rebuilt the data center slides around carrying capacity, so that it became the spine of the argument instead of one point among several, with The Dalles, Memphis and Dublin as the three cases that carry it. The rehearsal I had planned for the afternoon ended up folded into the editing itself. Working slide by slide, I talked the talk through as I went. It wasn't the clean, uninterrupted run-through I wanted, but it showed me where the argument still snags.

Late in the afternoon I walked to Suds at an easy pace, thirty-four minutes door to door, noting about twenty landmarks along the way. The landmarks are for a small project: a map of the route, so that a voice conversation on the walk can tell roughly where I am and how far I have to go. Gracie was behind the bar.

The walks are turning into thinking time. On this one the conversation wandered from a case of wine to the idea of a proper wine cellar, then to the hosting side of the Salon, which will be at my house: a few small pizzas arriving as people do, helpers, and a closing moment to end the evening on. From there it went somewhere less practical, to the difference between bringing people joy and being loved by them, to the old picture of what I expect from others, and to the odd experience of noticing awareness itself. It came back around to one of the occasional evenings I spend with my daughter Sydne over port, Stilton and a cribbage board, quality time that never needs an agenda.

It was a day run deliberately below nameplate. The important work moved forward, the walk gave my thinking room to wander, and the evening ended without anything I would want to undo.
